The aim of this lecture is to discuss with you the effective methods teaching of Aviation Management subject. I have given few instructions earlier about teaching aeronautical subjects. I shall tell you here Duties and responsibilities of Captain in command. This lecture is not for the Pilots but for the Management trainees of the airlines and their instructors of the subject as those who are working with managements of the airlines for them everything of the organization should be in their knowledge. For flight plan this must also be in the knowledge of concerned planning and management staffs.   However Captains and other pilots may refresh their knowledge though they know it.  This I developed in the light of my teaching this subject in the College of Aviation technology which has accreditation to teach this subject in Bangladesh.

In this lecture in the first stage I shall discuss with you about duties and responsibilities of Captain in Command in flight. A Captain in command is a senior officer in a flying aircraft. He conducts & his services are under the direction of Flight Operation Manager. Captains in command of all the flights are responsible for the flight. Their responsibilities before flight are as follows:

  1. The captain will be sure about the airworthiness of the aircraft. The instruments and other equipments required for the particular type of aircraft are installed and serviced and that a certificate of safety has been issued in respect of the aircraft.
  2. The captain will be sure about the Aircraft weight i.e. the total weight of the aircraft within the prescribed limit of the safe flight performance to be expected under prevailing circumstances.
  3. The captain must be sure about the load carried by the aircraft, about its distribution and secured for safe flight performance. He will also be ensured about the relevant documents necessary for the particular journey have been accurately prepared and duly signed where required.
  4. The captain will be sure about the fuel for a particular flight that the fuel on board the air craft is adequate and also required reserve also fueled according to regulation for the particular aircraft for its planned flight.
  5. He must be ensured about on board before 30 minutes of the flight in the aircraft of required operating and other crew members before the domestic flight and one hour before the departure of international flight. He will also be ensured about the medical fitness of the crew members to perform duty on board during flight.
  6. The captain must be ensured about time to time issued instructions and regulations by tee airlines, department of civil aviation authority or other appropriate authority.
  7. The captain must be ensured about safety of the aircraft i.e. the aircraft is safe for flight in all respect.
  8. The captain must be ensured about all weather information available. Weather condition  must be fully satisfactory for flight with an adequate margin of safety.
  9. He must be ensured about air routes; hence latest publication about the Air routes the facilities and airport information must be in his possession which he thoroughly studied.
  10. He must be ensured that the flight has been carefully planned with all necessary details including the appropriate forms and the clearance for the flight obtained from the controlling authority.
  11.  Captain must ensure all the necessary on board documents to be carried prior to the departure of the flight that were discussed in other lesson.
  12. He must ensure whether all the navigational kits including route manuals and charts are taken or not.
  13. He will ensure collection of meteorological reports.
  14. He will compute himself the airline flight plan or check the same when prepared by the flight operations officer as well as prepare the ATC flight plan and hand it over to ATC for approval.

I have discussed about Captains in command duties and responsibilities. Now I shall discuss about the Lesson Planning.  For effective teaching Lesson Planning is required. Institute may have its lesson plan in précis form. But instructor may think logical in his way. He may feel problem to teach that word by word. So, it is better for him to prepare his own lesson plan by the help of institute’s readymade lesson plan or guide lines. While you will prepare your lesson plan you will what is the subject, what the lesson you are going to teach, what will be your methods, what are the training aids i.e. computer/ multimedia/ other projection systems/ if required what types of demonstration materials will be used etc. The importances of a lesson plan are given below:

  1. Lesson plan will ensure that the instructor is covering whole the lesson.
  2.  It will help instructor to impart lessons in specified stages.
  3.  It helps instructor to impart his lesson logically that may be helpful for effective learning.
  4.  For a lesson many instructor s may be employed to may take class in their turn. So a lesson plan may be used as standard of that lesson when other instructor will take class. In this case it will be his guidance to make his own lesson plan.
  5. A good lesson plan will provide proper time control i.e. unto what time the lecture will be given, when training aids will be used, when other instructor will operate computer or power point and how long that will be used etc.
  6. It is also guide for proxy instructor or second instructor.
  7. A good lesson plan helps instructor to impart his lesson confidently.
  8. A lesson plan helps instructor to maintain standard to prepare exam questions.

Above mentioned importance are not only for this lesson, but it is common for all lessons. An instructor must remember if he adapts the techniques to creation of desire to learn by using maximum senses his students will able to adopt, so they will learn maximum. That is not possible without a lesson plan. So for successful teaching a plan must be prepared, software is not enough because that is prepared by someone. That may mere help to develop a new lesson plan of the instructor’s own.
